Baby Week Steering group meeting November 2015

The Baby Week Leeds steering group held its second meeting at the Rose Bowl (Leeds Becketts University) on Thursday 19 November 2015. We discussed the exciting developments since our meeting in June including dates and a structure for implementing Semana do Bebe (Brazil) to the UK.

Baby Week (Leeds) will start on Monday 12 September through to Friday 16 September. It will begin with a conference on the Monday (venue tba) followed by a week filled with activities and workshops for professionals, children and families in Leeds. It will conclude with a speech by Rt Hon Hilary Benn on the Friday 16 September 2016 in the Banqueting Suite at Leeds Civic Hall.

Shaheen Abbott (Social Worker, Leeds City Council) brought some fantastic ideas of which to include during the week. These range from; Informative workshops surrounding babies emotional health and growth development. A talk on the social skills babies are born with and how we can promote these. Further ideas include baby signing, babywearing slings, and positive birth stories.

Ann Pemberton (CEO Home-Start) and Emma Sutton (Events, Campaigns and Communications Manager, Leeds City Council) updated us with some news about how Baby Week Leeds has already been linked to promoting the Best Start Plan and in the process of developing ‘Best Start Zones’ across the city at targeted children centres. Sharon House (Leeds Children Centre Services) mentioned looking at joining particular children centre clusters linked to the Children’s and Families Trust Board as a core base to pull the activities within Baby Week together.

We are now in the process of contacting UNICEF to help us with campaigning and promoting Baby Week Leeds 2016. There will be updates of progress, and information on how more organisations can get involved with Baby Week, these will be loaded onto the Child Friendly Leeds blog which will start in the New Year.
